Mina El Teniente: Guinness World Record, The Largest Underground Copper Mine and the Start of an Unforgettable Journey

Located in Chile’s O’Higgins Region, El Teniente is not just a mine but an underground city with centuries of mining history and tradition. With a Guinness World Record as the largest underground copper mine in the world, this Chilean mining giant is a true marvel of engineering and human endeavour.

Why Does It Hold a Guinness World Record?

El Teniente mine earned its Guinness World Record for its 4,500 kilometres of underground development drives, a distance equivalent to the span between Chile and the United States (New York). This extensive network makes it the largest globally in length and production capacity. The mine produces over 450,000 tonnes of fine copper annually, significantly contributing to Chile’s economy and the global copper supply.

Over a century of operation has led to the development of this impressive underground network. It is a testament to advanced technology, innovative engineering, and the dedication of generations of miners. Its complexity and sheer scale position El Teniente as a global benchmark in underground mining, rightfully earning its Guinness title.

A Giant Beneath the Earth

Operated by Codelco, El Teniente features over 4,500 kilometres of underground development drives and an impressive production capacity. Cutting-edge technology, such as automated haul trucks and digitally controlled ventilation systems, ensures efficiency and safety across its operations.

One of the key mining techniques employed at El Teniente is Block Caving. This underground mining method is designed to extract large volumes of ore cheaply. It involves the controlled fracturing of the ore body, allowing the rock to collapse naturally under gravity to designated extraction points. This approach optimises resources while minimising the risks associated with conventional underground mining.

Where It All Began: My Story with El Teniente

El Teniente is not just a mining giant; it holds deep personal significance in my career. Here, I began my professional journey as a mining engineer, a place that taught me the true value of teamwork, resilience, and innovation in challenging environments.

Walking through its development drives and witnessing its sheer scale was an inspiration that shaped my passion for mining and my desire to share this experience with future generations.

The Mine that Fell Asleep in Chile: A Literary Journey Through El Teniente

That inspiration is now captured in my upcoming book, The Mine that Fell Asleep in Chile, set to be published in August 2025. Through the adventures of the characters Cath, Ty, and Nancy, readers will explore the depths of El Teniente and embark on a journey that combines reality, fantasy, and education about the mining world.

Each chapter set in El Teniente is designed to:

  • Inspire young minds to explore mining and STEM fields.
  • Showcase Chile’s rich history and cultural heritage through its iconic mines.
  • Promote inclusion and highlight the vital role of women in the mining industry.

The Significance of El Teniente for Chile and the World

El Teniente represents the strength of Chilean mining and the nation’s capacity for innovation and leadership in the global industry. Its economic impact and contributions to the advancement of mining technologies make it a true pillar of copper production.

For those of us who grew up in the mining world, El Teniente is more than a Guinness World Record. It is where dreams are born, careers are built, and new generations find inspiration.
